This literal "granny flat" is a one storey residence situated in the backyard of the owner's existing home. An exercise in rethinking "aging in place," balanced with the realities of immutable habits developed over a lifetime, the architecture must accommodate the inhabitants rather than the other way around. Circulation and accessibility are the primary organizing factors, as are idiosyncratic adjacencies such as a centralized car port and direct access to grandpa's stamp collection from his room. Architecturally, the house is defined by a north facing framed patio overlooking an existing koi pond.
